Abstrakt:

The vast majority of bridges are works for which owners have allocated no funds specifically for aesthetics. The visual impression created by these “practical bridges” is nonetheless important. Designers find it difficult to create bridges of high visual quality when no aesthetic premium is available. The key to designing bridges that are both economical and aesthetically significant is to incorporate new ideas into the design that enable the bridge to perform its practical function better than what had previously been possible. These new ideas can be a source of new and pleasing visible forms and can also take on aesthetic significance simply by virtue of their newness.
